Sutherland – SALT and frostbite

Sutherland – SALT and frostbite

Sutherland – nothing to do or a hive of business ?

Ever since my eyes were opened to the great world of traveling Sutherland has been at the top of my list and finally the urge for the coldest place in SA has been set free . With not many places to stay in Sutherland it was quite a task to find accommodation on our short notice trip which we finally found just before our departure .

The trip from Hermanus was a bit long winded until you enter the beautiful twisty and turny pass outside of Sutherland then the excitement starts . It was so funny looking at the temperature throughout our approach to Sutherland . We started on 18 Degrees Celsius in Hermanus but in the last 100 km towards Sutherland every 10 km we would drop one Degree Celsius until we were in Sutherland with a inevitable 0 Degrees Celsius . Only thing missing was the snow! The sky was beautiful and clear , only our breaths disturbing the silent skies .

We discovered the next morning that Sutherland would not be the best place to try out a new veggie garden as there was black ripe everywhere . It took us about 10 minutes of hot water on the wind shield to have been able to see where we were going . The day started with a nice breakfast and then the exciting drive to the well known SALT!

SALT- South African Large Telescope . SALT is the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. SALT is funded by different countries such as the US , Germany , Poland , India etc. It was a very exciting experience to hear the history of this institution and how we collaborate with other countries to optimaly use the SALT telescope to our advantage .

This town has a beautiful and very diverse history and the tourist industry has really exploded in the last couple of years . There are multiple other things to see and do in Sutherland such as 4×4 rides for the adventurous . There is also various Historical buildings such as churches and old Cape Dutch houses to have a look at . One interesting museum to have a close look at is the famous NP Van Wyk Louw’s house where he was born .

Sutherland is a very small yet busy town and definitely worth a visit once in your life !

PS : Please remember your warm clothes!
